DARK FRUIT CAKE 
1 1/2 c. water
1 1/2 c. sugar
1/4 c. butter
1 lb. raisins
2 eggs, beaten
2 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. allspice
1/2 c. citron (or mix of fruit)
1/2 c. nutmeats

Cook slowly the water, sugar, butter and raisins for 5 minutes. Cool. Add the eggs. Sift together the dry ingredients and add to first mixture. Mix thoroughly. Stir in the citron (or fruit) and nuts. This makes one large cake or 2 large loaves. Bake in slow oven (275 to 300 degrees) for 1 1/2 hours. Keeps from 3 to 6 months.
