SPICY BUTTERMILK COFFEE CAKE 
2 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
2 c. brown sugar, packed
2/3 c. shortening
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1 c. buttermilk or sour milk
2 beaten eggs
1/3 c. chopped nuts

Combine flour, brown sugar and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Cut in shortening until mixture is crumbly; set aside 1/2 cup crumb mixture. To remaining crumb mixture, add baking powder, soda, spices and mix well. Add buttermilk and eggs, mix well. Pour into two greased 8 x 1 1/2 inch or 9 x 1 1/2 inch round baking pans.

Combine reserved crumb mixture with nuts and sprinkle on top of cakes. Bake in a 375 degree oven for 20-25 minutes. Serve warm. Makes 2 coffee cakes.
