THRIFTY PLAIN CAKE 
1/2 lb. butter
1 2/3 c. sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
5 eggs
2 c. sifted cake flour
1 tsp. vanilla flavoring

Sift flour 3 times. Cream butter, sugar, salt, vanilla until fluffy. Add eggs and flour, alternately, beginning and ending with flour. Pour into greased and floured tube pan. Bake at 300 degrees for 10 minutes, then 350 degrees for 50 minutes. Cool in pan for 10 minutes OR pour lemon glaze on top while still hot.

LEMON GLAZE:

Mix 1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar, grated rind of 1 lemon, 4 tablespoons lemon juice. Pour on hot cake. Cool before removing from pan.
