KATHLEEN'S SPICED CRUMB CAKE 
2 c. reg. or cake flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/4 tsp. allspice
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 c. shortening
1 egg
2 tbsp. molasses
1 c. sour milk or buttermilk

TOPPING:

2 tbsp. butter, melted
1 tbsp. flour
4 tbsp. sugar
1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Sift, then measure the flour. Sift three times with baking soda, sugar, salt and spices. Cut in shortening as in making pie crust, until a fine crumb mixture is obtained. To the crumb mix, add molasses and well-beaten egg; blend well. Add sour milk or buttermilk and beat until smooth.

Turn into well-greased 8x8 inch pan. For a crumb top, mix the flour, sugar and cinnamon. Brush melted butter evenly over top of batter and sprinkle evenly with sugar mixture. Bake 350 degrees (or 325 degrees for glass pan) for 35-40 minutes. Test for doneness with toothpick.
