1 c. soft shortening
1 c. brown sugar, packed
1 egg
1/2 c. applesauce
2 1/4 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. cloves
1 c. raisins (optional)
1/2 c. nuts, chopped (optional)

Heat oven to 375°F. Mix together thoroughly shortening, brown sugar and egg. Stir in applesauce. Sift together flour, spices, soda and salt. Stir in shortening mixture. Add raisins and nuts (optional).
