BUTTERMILK BISCUITS | |
2 c. flour 3 tsp. baking powder 2 tsp. sugar 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar 1/4 tsp. baking soda 1/4 tsp. salt 1/2 c. shortening 3/4 c. buttermilk Stir together flour, baking powder, sugar, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Make well in center. Add buttermilk all at once and stir just until dough clings together. Knead gently on lightly floured surface 10 to 12 strokes. Roll or pat to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut with 2 1/2 inch biscuit cutter, dipping cutter in flour between cuts. Place on ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 450 degrees 10 to 12 minutes or until golden. Serve warm. Makes 10 to 12 biscuits. |
