AUNT SOPHIE'S GOULASH 
1 1/4-1 1/2 lb. lean beef cubes
1 lg. onion, sliced
1 tsp. salt
1/2 c. tomato juice
3 whole allspice
2 bay leaves
1/4 tsp. rubbed sage
1/4 c. red or white dry wine, optional
Rice or noodles

Brown first 3 ingredients in butter. When browned add some water and simmer for about 1 1/2 hours.

Now add tomato juice, allspice, bay leaves and rubbed sage. Simmer another hour or until beef is tender, adding water as needed. Just before cooking is finished add red or white wine if desired. Remove meat from pot and then thicken with cornstarch or flour. Put meat back in heat and serve over noodles or rice.
