SWEET AND SOUR RED CABBAGE 
Red cabbage, shredded fine
2 tbsp. bacon grease
1/2 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. pepper
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 c. sugar
3 tart apples, pared, cored and sliced

Boiling water to almost cover - cook slowly 1 hour. Add 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup vinegar. Simmer another hour. Thicken liquid with 1/4 cup water and 2 tablespoons cornstarch - add a dash of red food coloring to make it brighter.
