DATE FILLED COOKIES 
2 c. sugar (full)
1 c shortening
2 eggs
1 c. buttermilk
2 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. baking powder

Flour to roll. Chill overnight.

FILLING:

1 lb. dates
1 1/2 c. water
1/4 c. white sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

Boil all together until thick. Cut cookie dough into rounds. Put teaspoon filling on raw cookie round. Fold half over and seal with tines of fork. Bake at 350 degrees. This recipe was from Mrs. Docken - a friend of the Peterson family.
