5 c. flour (skimp on flour, leave out 1/2 inch for each cup)
1 c. sugar
1 lb. butter, softened (no substitute. Must be butter)
Mix sugar and butter together. Add flour one cup at a time to sugar and butter. Press mixture into 8 x 12 inch baking pan. Fork it like pie all over. Bake at 325 degrees for 3/4 of an hour until golden brown and toothpick dry. Let cool for five minutes, then cut into squares. Leave in baking pan for half an hour. When completely cooled, squares may be frosted and decorated with a half cherry or walnut.
