MARIE FOSTER'S CHOCOLATE CAKE
Ingredients for batter:

2 cups sugar
½ cup butter
½ cup shortening
1 cup sour milk (add 1 tsp vanilla to regular milk to make sour milk)
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking soda
2 eggs
2 ½ cups flour
½ cup cocoa
1 cup boiling water

Ingredients for Frosting:

6 tablespoons butter
½ cup cocoa
2 2/3 cups confectionery sugar
1/3 cup milk
1 tsp vanilla extract

Batter: Cream together the sugar, butter, and shortening. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Bake at 350°F for 35 minutes. Do not over bake!

Frosting: Cream the butter, cocoa, and sugar. Alternate the milk and vanilla until mixture is creamy.

Note: This was my mother's recipe and it is by far the best chocolate cake I have ever tasted. My brother Tim used to have these cakes shipped to him from her home in Pennsylvania to his home in Texas.

I never heard of making sour milk with vanilla. I always used lemon.

The cake tastes very good. Unfortunately every single time I make it it falls in the middle following the directions as given.
