FAVORITE COFFEE CAKE 
1 1/2 c. flour
3/4 c. sugar
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
3/4 tsp. salt
1/4 c. shortening
3/4 c. milk
1 egg

TOPPING:

1/3 c. brown sugar, packed
1/4 c. flour
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
3 tbsp. butter
1 c. walnuts, chopped or raisins

Heat oven to 375 degrees. Grease 9-inch round or square pan. Mix sugar, shortening, milk and egg together until creamy. Add flour, baking powder and salt to mixture. Pour half of batter into pan, then add topping: brown sugar (packed), flour, cinnamon and butter with chopped walnuts or raisins. Make into crumbly topping with two knives or pastry blender. Pour remaining batter over topping. Sprinkle left topping on batter and bake for 25 to 30 minutes.
