The mountain and vineyard behind our house provide the perfect haven for quite a few species of birds. I particularly enjoy watching them on days when I'm in the kitchen baking bread.
This "bread" is a gift of thanks for all the pleasure that the birds offer. Since we have outdoor cats, I spread the mixture onto a pine cone and hang them from tree branches for a safer snack. 1 c. unsalted butter (2 sticks) 4 c. oatmeal 1 c. crunchy peanut butter 1 c. chopped fruit (apples, raisins, dates & oranges) 1/2 c. commercial birdseed 1/2 c. sunflower seeds
Bring the water and butter to a boil in a large pot. Slowly stir in the oatmeal and cook until thick, about 10 minutes. Remove mixture from the heat and stir in peanut butter and fruit. Let cool before adding seeds.
Spoon mixture into small, non-metallic containers or into the shells of oranges or grapefruits. Store in the refrigerator or freezer and use as needed. Serves countless grateful birds.
