SOFT PRETZELS 
1 c. milk
1 c. water
1/2 c. sugar
1 pkg. yeast
1 1/4 tbsp. salt
1/2 c. melted shortening
at least 6 c. flour
2 tsp. baking soda
Egg whites
Coarse salt

Warm milk and add water. Mix yeast, sugar, salt and milk. Add melted shortening and 2 cups flour. Stir all together and mix with beater. Slowly add flour until hard to stir. Knead until shiny (about 10 minutes). Let rise until double its size, about 1 hour. Roll out and shape. Boil water with 2 teaspoons soda. Place pretzels in water. Boil until they float (about 1 minute). Place on brown paper and let drain. Brush with egg whites and sprinkle with coarse salt. Bake 15 minutes at 350 degrees.
