RED VELVET CAKE 
1 1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. shortening
2 eggs
2 oz. red food coloring
2 c. flour
1 tsp. cocoa
1/4 tsp. salt
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. vinegar
1 tsp. baking soda

Cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs and food coloring. Sift flour, cocoa, and salt 3 times. Add the buttermilk and flour alternately to the creamed mixture. Mix vinegar and soda together real good and fold into cake mixture. Bake in greased pans 30 to 35 minutes at 350 degrees.

FROSTING:

1 c. milk
1/4 c. flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. shortening
1 stick butter
2 tsp. vanilla

Cook milk, flour, and salt until thick. Let cool. Cream shortening, sugar, and butter until fluffy. Add cooled mixture and vanilla and beat with electric mixer until fluffy. It is ready when put between your teeth and you can not hear a crunch.
