SHORTBREAD COOKIES 
1/2 c. butter (1 stick)
1/2 c. vegetable shortening
1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. almond extract
2 1/4 c. all-purpose flour
Nonpareils

Cream the butter and shortening with the sugar. Add extract and flour using 1/2 cup at a time. With this mixture, form a big ball. Don't work it too much.

Take little portions and form tiny balls. Arrange in cookie sheet (don't grease). Press down with pinky finger in the middle to make a little hole. Sprinkle with the nonpareils.

Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. You may substitute the nonpareils with colored sugar, cherries, or jam.
