1 c. sugar
1/2 c. lard
1 egg, beaten

Beat all together until fluffy. Add:

2 c. sifted flour
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. nutmeg
3/4 c. sour milk
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

Mix well with sugar-lard mixture. Drop on greased cookie sheet in mounds of 1 teaspoon each about 2 inches apart. Leave them well rounded. Sprinkle lightly with sugar and bake in moderate 400 degree oven for 12 to 15 minutes. Makes about 2 1/2 dozen cookies.
