SWEET PICKLES 
1 gallon cucumbers
2 c. sugar
1 c. vinegar
1/4 c. pickling spice
1 tsp. alum
Boiling water

Wash cucumbers and pack in stone jar. Pour boiling water over cucumbers for 4 mornings, use fresh water each morning.

On the 5th morning, wash cucumbers in cold water, and cut crosswise. To 1 gallon cucumbers, add 1 teaspoon alum.

Make syrup of sugar, vinegar and spices. Heat to a rolling boil. Pour over cucumbers 4 mornings. On 5th morning, pack jars, pour hot syrup over pickles and seal.
