GORDITAS 
2 c. masa corn meal
1 1/2 c. water
Shortening, to fry

MEAT SAUCE:

1 lb. hamburger
2 tbsp. chopped onion
Jalapeno peppers to taste
2 tbsp. chili powder
1 tsp. salt

Combine corn meal and water; knead for 4-5 minutes. Roll into individual balls 2 inches in diameter. Flatten. Cook in ungreased skillet until warm. Turn over for a couple of minutes. Remove from skillet. Turn up edges all around. Deep fry until lightly brown. Then fill with 1 layer of refried beans and then 1 layer of meat sauce.

Meat Sauce: Brown hamburger meat. Add onions and cook until soft. Add peppers and seasoning. Fill gordita shells.

Thanks for sharing... These are a family favorite, except we call them "sopes". Gorditas for us are stuffed tortillas (flour or corn), much like the pupusa in El Salvador.
