CHOCOLATE CHERRY CAKE 
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 egg, beaten
1 sq. melted chocolate
2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
5 oz. Maraschino cherries, chopped
1/2 c. chopped nuts

Drain juice from cherries. Put in a cup. Add buttermilk to this to equal 1 cup liquid.

Proceed mixing the cake as you would any other cake adding the chopped cherries and nuts last.

Bake in moderate oven 40 to 45 minutes in a 9 x 13 pan.
