2 lb. phyllo 1 lb. rendered butter 2 c. ground walnuts 1 c. sugar Syrup: 3 c. water 3 c. sugar 1/2 lemon Make syrup by boiling sugar, water and lemon half over low heat till it begins to thicken. Cool slightly. Warm the rendered butter to liquid state. Combine walnuts and sugar. Set aside. Brush butter on sides and bottom of jelly roll pan. Place a pastry sheet on bottom of pan and brush with butter. Keep remainder of dough covered with a damp cover. Repeat process until there are 25 layers of buttered dough. Spread nut mixture evenly over dough. Place a leaf of pastry over nut mixture and butter. Finish with remaining layers. With a sharp knife, cut into diamond shapes. Add more rendered butter on top. Bake in 325°F oven for 45 mins-1 hour or until golden brown. Remove from oven and drizzle cooled syrup over baklava. |
