1/2 c shortening
1-1/2 c brown sugar
1 egg
1 c thick applesauce
1 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp cloves
2 c flour
1 tsp. baking soda

Cream shortening, sugar and egg together. Dissolve soda and applesauce. Add to shortening mixture. Sift salt, cinnamon and cloves with part of the flour. Add to shortening mixture. Add enough of the flour to make a fairly stiff batter. Pour into a greased loaf pan.

Bake at 350°F for 50-60 minutes.
