SYRUP RYE BREAD | |
1 qt. lukewarm water 1 pkg. dry yeast 1 tbsp. white sugar 4 to 6 c. white flour 1/3 c. shortening, melted 1 tbsp. salt 1 to 1 1/2 c. brown sugar 1 c. dark syrup 3 c. med. rye flour Dissolve yeast and 1 tablespoon white sugar in lukewarm water;. add to 4 cups white flour, mix with spoon until spongy or it bubbles. Don't cover. Add 1/3 cup melted shortening, 1 tablespoon salt, 1 cup or more of brown sugar, 1 cup dark syrup, 3 cups rye flour and 4 to 6 cups white flour. Mix and knead. Cover and let rise. Punch down, let rise again. Put in 4 greased bread pans, let rise again. Bake at 350 degrees about 50 minutes. Brush tops of warm loaves with butter. |
