DEAR DORIS' DATE NUT COOKIES 
1 c. butter
1 1/2 c. dark brown sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 c. quick oats
3 1/4 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. salt

Cream butter and sugar well. Add eggs one at a time and beat until light and fluffy. Add oats and then sifted dry ingredients. Add vanilla. CHILL DOUGH. Roll 1/4 of the dough at a time to a 1/2 inch thickness on a well floured surface.

FILLING:

1 lg. or 2 sm. packs pitted dates, cut fine
1 c. sugar
1 c. water
1 c. chopped walnuts

Combine dates, sugar and water. Boil for 2 minutes stirring constantly. Remove from heat and beat until smooth.

Spread 1 teaspoon of date filling on each cut cookie and fold over. Bake on ungreased sheet in 375 degree oven for 8 to 10 minutes or until dough becomes delicate tan. 7 dozen.

Grated rind from 2 oranges may be added to date filling.
