CHOCOLATE ORANGE BLOSSOMS
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. firmly packed brown sugar
1/4 c. unsweetened cocoa
1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. softened butter
1 tbsp. orange juice
1 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
1 3/4 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
Sugar
48 Hershey's Milk Chocolate Kisses

Beat 1/2 cup sugar, brown sugar, cocoa, shortening and butter until light and fluffy. Add orange peel, vanilla and egg; blend well. Lightly spoon flour into cup and measure. Stir in flour, baking soda and salt. Cover with plastic and refrigerate 1 hour for easier handling.

Heat oven to 375°F. Shape dough into 1-inch balls, roll in sugar. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.

Bake for 10-12 minutes. Remove from oven and immediately place one candy kiss; press down firmly so cookie cracks around edges. Remove from cookie sheet.

Note: This recipe dates to about 1940 when it first appeared in a Hershey's Recipe pamphlet but has been modified over the years as it has been passed down over generations. It was found in my Grandmother's recipe file and she had notes scribbled across the yellowed paper card attached. The recipe makes cookies which should not be confused with commercially available pastries and is not endorsed by Hershey's or any other trademark holder.
