FRUIT BREAD 
1/2 c. boiling water
1 c. dates
1/2 c. orange juice
1 tbsp. shortening
3/4 c. brown sugar
1 egg
1 7/8 c. flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. chopped nuts
1/4 c. grated orange rind

Pour boiling water over dates; cool slightly. Add orange juice, shortening, sugar and egg. Mix well. Measure flour (not sifted) onto square of waxed paper. Add baking powder and salt and stir to blend. Add dry ingredients, nuts and rind to date mixture. Pour into greased 9 x 5 x 3 inch loaf pan. Let stand 20 minutes. Bake at 350 degrees for 55 minutes to 1 hour. Remove from pan and cool on rack. Makes 1 loaf.
