CRABAPPLE PICKLES
Crabapples to fill 4 qt. jars 5 c. sugar 4 c. water 1/4 c. vinegar Stick or press whole cloves into 1/3-1/2 of the crabapples. Fill jars with apples and bring sugar, water and sugar to boil. Pour syrup over apples. Process in a boiling water bath for 45 minutes.

what do you mean "Put cloves into" the apples? Like cut the apples and put them in there or just put them in the jar with the apples?

It means to press the cloves into the crabapples as you would push a pin into a pincushion.
