BUTTERMILK CAKE 
1 c. shortening
2 c. sugar
4 egg yolks
1 c. buttermilk
3 c. flour
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. baking soda
4 egg whites, stiffly beaten

Oven 350 degrees. Cream shortening. Add sugar, beating until fluffy. Add yolks, one at a time, and beat well. Add sifted dry ingredients slowly with buttermilk. Fold in whites. Pour in greased and floured 9 x 13 inch pan. Bake 50 minutes.

BROILED FROSTING:

3 tbsp. melted butter
1/2 c. brown sugar
1 c. chopped nuts or coconut
3 tbsp. light cream or milk

Mix together and spread on hot cake. Put under broiler for 1-2 minutes.
