OLD-FASHIONED BREAD PUDDING
5-6 slices white bread
1/2 c. butter
1 c. raisins
5 eggs
1 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/8 tsp. mace
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. baking powder
4 c. light cream or milk
2 tsp. vanilla

Butter the bread slices. (Bread should be somewhat dry.) Stack slices on cutting board and cut in 1/2 inch cubes. Scatter layer of cubes into greased 3 quart casserole. Sprinkle with 1/2 the raisins and continue to layer until bread cubes and raisins are used up. Beat eggs in bowl and add sugar, spices, salt, and baking powder. Beat well to blend. Scald cream, add vanilla and stir into egg mixture a little at a time. Pour the egg mixture over the cubed bread. Let stand 10 minutes. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes or until custard is set.
