GRANDMA'S DUTCH APPLE CAKE 
2 c. flour
4 tsp. baking powder
1/4 c. sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
4 tbsp. shortening
1 c. milk
1 egg, beaten
3 apples
1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon

In large bowl, sift flour with baking powder, 1/4 cup sugar and salt. Cut shortening into mixture. Combine milk and egg. Add to flour mixture. Stir until blended. Peel apples; quarter and slice. Spread batter into greased 9 x 9-inch pan. Arrange apple slices in a row or pattern on top of batter, pressing in lightly but not flat. Sprinkle cinnamon and 1/2 cup sugar on top.

Bake at 375°F for 40 minutes.
