BASIC SWEET DOUGH 
4 1/4 to 4 3/4 c. flour
1/2 c. warm water
2 pkgs. dry yeast
3/4 c. lukewarm milk
1/4 to 1/3 c. sugar
1 tsp. salt
1/3 c. shortening
2 eggs

Soak yeast in warm water 5 minutes.

Combine lukewarm milk, sugar, and salt in large mixing bowl. Stir to dissolve. Beat in shortening, eggs, yeast mixture, and 1 cup flour with rotary beater until smooth. Add remaining flour. Mix until dough leaves side of bowl. Turn on lightly floured board. Knead until dough becomes smooth and elastic, 5 to 10 minutes.

Place in lightly greased bowl. Grease top of dough. Cover with wax paper. Let rise in warm place until doubled. Punch down. Divide dough for coffee cake or rolls. Shape; let rise until doubled. Bake at 375 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes for coffee cake or 12 to 15 minutes for rolls. Yield: 2 coffee cakes or 3 dozen rolls.
