IRISH SPICE CAKE 
2 c. sugar
2 c. water
2 sticks butter
2 tsp. cinnamon
2 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. ground cloves
1 c. raisins
3 c. flour
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 c. walnuts

Combine the first 7 ingredients and bring to a boil. Continue to boil for 7 minutes. Let stand until cool. Add 3 cups of flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking soda to this mixture. Add 1 cup of chopped walnuts. Mix and pour into a 9 x 13 inch pan or a 10 inch tube pan. Bake approximately 50 minutes at 350 degrees. Let cool.
