JULIE'S OLD FASHIONED JAM CAKE 
1 c. butter
2 c. sugar
4 eggs
1 c. jam
1 c. nuts
3 c. flour
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. each cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice

Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add unbeaten eggs, one at a time, beating well after each egg is added (important). Add jam, mix well. Mix spices with flour. Stir soda into milk. Add milk and flour alternately. Fold in nuts. Bake in 2 layers (9 inch) at 350 degrees for 30 to 40 minutes. Cool. Spread with Caramel Icing.

CARAMEL ICING:

2 c. sugar
1 c. milk

Bring to boil in saucepan and cook for 5 to 10 minutes. Put 1/2 pound butter and 1/4 cup sugar and cook until mixture browns. Add this to milk and cook until soft balls form. Beat until cook enough to spread on cake.
