AUTUMN APPLE CAKE 
This cake is especially delicious in the fall of the year, served warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

1 cup sugar
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 cup shortening
1 egg, beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 cup milk
2 cups sliced apples

Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease 9x13-inch baking pan.

Sift together sugar, flour, salt, baking powder and baking soda. Cut in shortening. Add beaten egg, vanilla, milk and sliced apples. Pour into pan. Add topping (see below).

Bake at 375°F for 10 minutes; reduce temperature to 350°F and bake for 25 to 30 minutes.

TOPPING:

1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup chopped nuts
2 tbsp. butter
2 tbsp. all-purpose flour

Mix together sugar, nuts, butter and flour.
