1/2 c. butter
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1 heaping tsp. baking soda dissolved in 1/2 c. boiling water
1 1/2 c. applesauce
1 heaping tbsp. cocoa powder
1 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 c. flour
1 c. raisins
1/2 c. nuts (opt.)

Cream butter and sugar together. Add egg and beat well. Add water with soda added to it and the applesauce; blend well. Add cocoa, spices and vanilla. Then add flour, raisins and nuts. Pour into greased and floured 9"x13" cake pan or into cupcake tins lined with cupcake papers (makes 24 cupcakes). Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes for cupcakes or 40 minutes for cake pan.
