GERMANY: APFEL KUCHEN (APPLE
CAKE)
 
DOUGH:

1 stick butter
1 egg
1/4 c. sugar
1 1/4 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
Little lemon peel (grated)
2-3 tbsp. milk

Soften butter (can use mixer), mix with sugar. Add egg, flour, baking powder and milk (alternate flour with milk). Grease baking dish. Put dough in dish, spread with spatula and floured fingers, make rim on edges. Peel, core, slice thinly, 5 to 6 medium McIntosh apples.

STREUSEL TOPPING:

1 stick butter
1/3 c. sugar
1/2 c. flour

Mix with fingertips; sprinkle on top. Bake 25 to 50 minutes in 350 degree oven. Check apples with point of knife for tenderness.
