APPLE CROW'S NEST
4 med. sized tart apples
1 c. flour
2 tbsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 c. sugar
3 tbsp. shortening
1/3 c. milk

Slice apples, place in well greased pan or Pyrex dish. Dot with butter, sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon.

Mix flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Sift twice. Cut in the shortening with a blender. Add milk to make a soft dough and spread over apples. (Wet back of spoon to promote better spreading of dough.)

Bake at 400 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes. Make sure apples are cooked well. When cooked completely invert on plate. Serve hot or cold with ice cream.

 Noreen Sheldon (New Hampshire) says:
This is ecellent if served warm with small amount of heavy cream with nutmeg poured over the crow,s nest. If you use to much it will make it soggy.

 Alan Barbour (California) says:
My great-grandmother used buttered (home-made, surely) bread rather than a batter; but I hadn't known it should be inverted, which makes sense of the name.
