BOB'S DATE CAKE 
2 c. sugar
2 3/4 c. flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. melted fat (Crisco)
1 1/2 c. boiling water
1 tsp. vanilla
2 c. chopped dates
1 egg
1 c. chopped walnuts
1/4 c. whole wheat halves
A few maraschino cherries

Cut dates in quarters. Pour boiling water over them. Cream the fat and sugar together. Add the well beaten eggs, then flour, then water which has been drained off dates. Put in a little flour and a little water at a time, until all is used. Beat all together. Add dates, vanilla, salt and nuts. Put in an angel food cake pan and top with walnut halves and maraschino cherries. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. To cool, invert pan and cover with cold cloth. Run knife around edge and cake will slide out.
