NISUA (Finnish Coffee Cake) 
1 pkg. dry yeast
1/4 c. lukewarm water

Dissolve in cup and add to lukewarm mixture in step 2. 6 tbsp. sugar 1 1/2 tsp. salt 4 tbsp. shortening 1 tsp. cardamom

Mix and cool to lukewarm. 3 or more c. flour, mixed in

Knead dough and set in warm place to raise until doubled. Punch down and let rise again.

Divide dough into 3 parts. Roll each part into a 12 inch strand. Place on greased baking sheet and braid starting at center and braiding to each end. Seal ends. Cover and let rise in warm place until doubled, about 45 minutes. Bake in a hot oven (400 degrees) 20-25 minutes. Remove from baking sheet and place on wire rack. It may be brushed with thin confectioners' sugar icing.
