2 eggs 3/4 c. sugar 2 tbsp. shortening 3/4 c. buttermilk 3 3/4 c. plain flour 2 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. cinnamon 1/4 tsp. nutmeg Preheat frying pan with 6 cups cooking oil at 400 degrees. Beat the eggs very well. Gradually add sugar and continue beating. Mix in the shortening and buttermilk. Sift the dry ingredients together and stir them in buttermilk mixture. Chill the dough in the refrigerator. Roll dough about 1/3 inch thickness on lightly floured board. Cut the dough nuts with a floured doughnut cutter and slip them into the hot oil. When they have browned on the side, turn and brown them on the other side. Drain on paper towels. Makes 2 1/2 dozen. |
