MEAT & VEGETABLE PASTIES 
2 c. shortening
1 c. water
1 tsp. salt
7 c. flour

FILLING:

3 lb. ground beef
3 lb. diced potatoes
3 lb. diced carrots
3 lb. diced rutabagas
1 c. diced onion
Salt & pepper to taste

Work shortening into flour and salt. Add water to make a workable dough. Roll dough in a circle shape about 4 inches.

Mix filling ingredients together. Place a mound of filling in the center of dough circle and fold dough over it. Crimp edges. Place on baking sheet. Prick top of pastry with a fork to allow steam to escape. Bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes. Turn oven down to 300-325 degrees. Bake for 30 minutes. Rotate pans from top to bottom. Bake 30 minutes more or until pastries are golden brown.
