SPICED SHORTCAKE 
This shortcake may be used with sweetened blackberries, raspberries or strawberries.

1/2 c. sugar
1 beaten egg
5 tbsp. melted shortening or cooking oil
1 3/4 c. flour
1/4 tsp. salt
4 tsp. baking powder
3/4 c. water

Mix sugar, beaten egg and 5 tablespoons melted shortening thoroughly. Sift flour, salt and baking powder together and add to sugar-egg mixture alternately with water. Pour in greased and floured 9 inch layer cake pan, spread in batter toward edge.

Mix until crumbly 6 tablespoons flour, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1 tablespoon butter and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon; sprinkle over batter. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes. Cool slightly and split. Serve with sweetened berries between layers and over top.
