“CHRISTMAS CUT OUTS” IS IN:

CHRISTMAS CUT OUTS
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 egg
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 1/2 cups cake flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla

Cream shortening well. Add sugar and egg and blend together. Sift baking powder, flour and salt together and add to creamed mixture alternately with the milk. Stir in vanilla. Check dough consistency; if dough is too dry, add a tablespoon more of milk at a time; if dough is too sticky, add a tablespoon more of flour at a time, until the dough is of a workable consistency. Try to use as little flour as possible to avoid tough cookies.

Refrigerate for several hours or overnight.

Roll out to a 1/16-inch thickness on a pastry cloth, silicone sheet or parchment paper.

Cut into desired shapes. Brush with egg white, decorate and bake at 350°F for 10-12 minutes.

Makes about 100 (2-inch) cookies.

Very sticky, ended up to be a flour fight. No cookies.

Hi Nova,

A sticky dough can be rescued. A dough with an incorrect consistency at first is common in baking - just adjust it!

Flour is variable in how much humidity it contains and because of that how much moisture it will absorb. Because of this, professional bakers use weights instead of measurements.

Eggs are different sizes and people's measuring cups are sometimes a different size than standard; sometimes people use dry measuring cups to measure liquids, etc.

Even oven temperatures vary widely.

Different people come out with different cookies even though they are using the same recipe.

For these reasons, when making cookies, it is usually necessary to adjust to your own conditions by adding more flour (as little as possible) if your dough is too sticky or more liquid if the cookie dough is too dry, unless the recipe specifies otherwise. This is the same in all types of baking.

My mother even told me they were really good :d thank you for the recipe!! I was also told that next year to put nutmeg in the recipe.. Any Christmas cookies that have nutmeg in them?

For anyone in high humidity that want an easy fix, with slight taste difference. After refrigerated, mixture is still sticky use brown sugar to assist with moisture stickiness of cookie.
