VICTORIAN APPLESAUCE CAKE 
2 c. flour
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 tsp. salt
2 tbsp. cocoa
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. cloves
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. allspice
1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. applesauce
2 eggs, unbeaten
2 c. chopped dates
2 c. chopped nuts
2 c. raisins

Sift all dry ingredients into large bowl. Add shortening and applesauce; beat 200 strokes. Add eggs and beat 200 strokes. Add dates, nuts and raisins. Pour into well greased tube spring pan. Sprinkle a topping of 1/4 cup chopped nuts and 2 tablespoons sugar mixed together, place on top of cake. Bake 1 hour and 25 minutes at 350 degrees.
