VICTORIAN APPLESAUCE CAKE 
2 c. sifted cake flour
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 tsp. salt
2 tbsp. cocoa
1/2 tsp. each: cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, allspice
1/2 c. Crisco
1 1/2 c. unsweetened applesauce
2 eggs, unbeaten

Add:

3/4 c. dates, chopped
3/4 c. raisins, chopped
1/3 c. citron, diced (opt.)
3/4 c. nuts, chopped

TOPPINGS:

1/4 c. nuts, chopped
2 tbsp. sugar

Mix all ingredients. Pour batter into Crisco-coated tube pan. Sprinkle nut-sugar topping over batter. (Topping may be omitted) Bake in moderate oven 350 degrees for 1 hour and 25 - 35 minutes.
