LARGE DATE AND NUT BREAD 
1 1/2 c. boiling water
1 c. chopped dates

Pour boiling water over the dates and let it stand for 10 minutes. 1 whole egg, beaten 2 1/4 c. flour 1/4 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 2 tsp. baking soda 1 c. chopped walnuts 1 tbsp. melted shortening 1 tsp. vanilla

Add sugar gradually to egg. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and soda and stir the walnuts. Add the date mixture alternately with dry ingredients and nuts. Stir in shortening and vanilla. Pour it onto a greased loaf pan 10 x 5 x 3 inch baking loaf. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Serves 10.
