DATE BARS 
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar
1 1/2 c. four
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1 3/4 c. quick cooking rolled oats

Thoroughly cream shortening and sugar. Add sifted dry ingredients to oats. Mix until crumbly. Firmly pat 1/2 of the mixture in a waxed paper lined 9 x 13 pan. Spread date filing; cook 1 pound of dates, pitted and cut, with 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water until mixture resembles jam. Add remaining crumbs over jam mixture, pat smooth. Bake in 350 degree oven for 30 minutes. Cut bars. Makes 20.
