CARAMEL - WALNUT BARS 
1 1/2 c. unsifted all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 c. butter, softened
1 c. granulated sugar
2 egg yolks
2 tbsp. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
2 egg whites
1 c. light brown sugar, packed
1 c. coarsely chopped walnuts

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a 9 x 9 x 2 inch baking pan.

2. Sift flour with baking powder in medium bowl with mixer at medium speed, cream butter with sugar and egg yolks until light and fluffy.

3. At low speed, beat in flour mixture along with milk and vanilla until combined. Pour into pan spreading evenly. Bake 20 minutes.

4. in small bowl beat egg whites, until stiff. Gradually beat in brown sugar, then stir in nuts. Spread evenly on top of warm crust. Bake 20 minutes longer until puffed and lightly browned.

5. Cut into 16 bars while still warm. Let cool completely in pan on wire rack.
