OLD, OLD TIME GINGERBREAD 
1/2 c. butter or other shortening
1 egg, beaten
1 tsp. ginger
1/2 tsp. cloves
1 c. hot water
1/2 c. granulated sugar
2 1/2 c. flour
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 c. Brer Rabbit syrup
1/2 tsp. salt

Cream shortening and sugar; add beaten egg. Measure and sift dry ingredients. Combine syrup and hot water. Add dry ingredients alternately with liquid, a small amount at a time, and beat after each addition until smooth. Bake in paper lined pan, 9"x9"x2" in moderate oven, 350 degrees, for 45 minutes.
