CARAMEL CAKE 
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 c. butter
4 eggs
2 1/2 c. cake flour or plain flour
3 tsp. baking powder
1 c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla

Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs and mix well. Alternately add milk and dry ingredients. Add flavoring. Bake in 3 layers at 300 degrees.

FROSTING:

3 1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. water
1 c. milk
3/4 c. butter
1/8 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla

Brown 1/2 cup sugar in large heavy pan on low heat. Add water and cook until it is a syrup. Combine with other ingredients and boil rapidly to the soft ball stage. Cool and beat to spreading consistency.
